BBEAG 5/10KM FUN RUN A RUNAWAY SUCCESS!

The Bela-Bela Education Advocacy Group will like to inform all its stakeholders that the first of its kind FUN RUN held in Bela-Bela on the 5th June 2010 was nothing short of a runaway success.

Over 45 runners took part in the two main races, viz; 5km and the 10km Fun Run amid much fan fare and a great atmosphere.

Main prizes were sponsored by Nestle South Africa plus the Limpopo Sports Council. Bela-Bela Pick n Pay sponsored the runners with 400 wors rolls and sauces. BBEAG bought the wors meat to add to the rolls.

For the first time since our bid to raise funds for a bursary fund started, the group made extra funds after income and expenditure were counted, making the FUN RUN the most successful event of the group yet!

The main prize winners across the race categories will be included in this week's newsletter. Look out for it.

Fun Run: Who will stand on the podium of champions?

The first annual BBEAG 5/10km Fun Run is upon us. Next week Saturday, 05 June 2010, men and women from all walks of life will be putting their shoes and fun on in the name of education.

Over 150 participants are expected to participate at this inaugural Fun Run including Athletics clubs, patrons and members of the general public. The race will start behind the Main Bela-Bela Municipality offices and will finish at the same spot. Medals and other prizes will be won. Food and refreshments will be sold. Cars will also be washed for a nominal fee

Registration will take place at the venue from 6.30am.

BBEAG Leadership Camp a massive success!

The BBEAG leadership camp that was held on the 21-23 May 2010 was deemed a massive success by those who went. All Heads of Department made presentations on their portfolios to shed light on some of their plans for the rest of the year.

Not all of the camp was work, various fun programs was the rigueur at Camp including Pop Idols, early morning exercise, ice breakers, morabaraba and swimming pool competitions. We played hard and worked twice as hard.

BBEAG Leadership Camp - It’s on!

After many moons of planning, the BBEAG Leadership Camp will be taking place this weekend, 21-23 May 2010 at an exclusive location in the Limpopo Province.

What are we gonna do? Well for starters we want to ensure that our plans for the 2010 year are synchronised and coherent among ourselves before we go reveal them to the public and our stakeholders. Those of you who are aware know that at the beginning of this year we planned and hosted two significant events: 1) The 1st Annual Bela-Bela Education Summit in conjuction with the BB Municipality, where we brainstormed and deliberated on ways to improve the education question in Bela-Bela and 2) We hosted the largest ever Easter Vacation School Program (eVSP) that hosted over 170 matriculants from the local high schools as well as Vingerkraal. Right now we are planning another event, the BBEAG 5/10km Fun Run for the 5th June 2010. Planning is at an advanced stage.

This weekend we will finalise the list of events and school interventions for the 2010/11 year so that we can boldly pronounce on them and to keep our stakeholders ever informed. We will also be building on the team spirit of our organisation to ensure that we all understand our commitment on Education and on being a better, stronger team.

Expect to see a steady trickle of Fb status updates, photos of activities as well as the fun we gonna have too on our individual and group profiles.

Fun Run

Run it ...Jog it…Walk it…Enjoy it!

The long awaited BBEAG organised fun run is finally confirmed. Join “BBEAG Run for Education 5/10km Fun Run” which will be held on Saturday, 05 June 2010.

We are looking to attract more than 300 runners to come and run for education. The Fun Run begins at 7:00AM, but for registration purposes participants should arrive at 6:30AM. The Fun Run starts at the corner Chris Hani drive and Grobler Street (behind the main Bela-Bela Municipality Buildings).

As part of our fundraising efforts for the bursary scheme, food and drinks will be sold. Cars will also be washed by some of our members (including female BBEAG ladies in leotards) for a fee of R30!

Registration fee is as follows

R40 per person (adults, athletics clubs) R10 per person (Under 18s, the unemployed & pensioners)

R200 Corporate members

Please note: MoFAYA will be burning the decks with some warm sounds to take the chill away. We will also be wishing Bafana-Bafana good luck before their first match against Mejico (11 June 2010).

BBEAG-branded merchandise coming soon

BBEAG will be selling its branded merchandise to further help in its efforts to raise funds for the bursary scheme. R250 000 is our bursary scheme target for the year.

Bursaries will be awarded to the top matriculants at the beginning of the new year, 2011, to help them further their studies.

LADIES & GENTLEMEN

I greet you all in the name of education.

I stand before you today, as the Programme Coordinator for the recently established Bela-Bela Education Advocacy Group (BBEAG), a non-government organisation established for the purpose of improving the education output of our town (Bela-Bela).

Our organisation is made up of young people, but not just any kind of young people, but young people who are driven and dedicated towards the improvement of the education standards in Bela-Bela’s public schools. From the beginning of this year we have lobbied:

· principals,

· teachers,

· learners,

· the education department,

· school governing bodies

· bela-bela municipality and

· other progressive members of the public and in the private space

to prioritize the education question in our three local schools, viz Maope, Raeleng & Bela-Bela. We have also been joined, enthusiastically by Vingerkraal High School in this great battle. Our vision for these schools is simple: 75% matric pass rate across the board by 2015!

And yes, we are conscious about what we are saying. Getting results to rise to a desired level is not complex but it needs collaboration. Collaboration by each and every member of the public to re-look education in a different light. It needs men and women, like Dr. SS Khumalo, whom we are gathered here to celebrate, to step up and help the cause for a better education for our brother & sisters. It needs the law enforcement to act decisively and with speed when learners, teachers and principals complain about drug peddlers and users at school. This problem ladies & gentlemen, needs school managers, teachers, circuit management, inspectors and learners to report those among them who are bringing shame to the culture of learning and teaching. If a teacher is a loafer, slack and not pulling his/her weight as an educator – The Department of Education must dismiss that person!

We must not be shy to act anymore.

We must not cover for mediocrity anymore.

We must not abdicate our responsibility anymore. If it is not your responsibility, whose is it?

We must not be shy to hold joint teachers meeting across the three schools anymore. If anything, we must start seeing joint meetings among the three schools at least once a month…not during school hours, but after school.

We must not be shy to extend the mandate of the school governing boardies to hold the school managers to account when results are not forthcoming. If anything, should a school principal oversee a school that produces declining, three years in a row, that principal must be fired. The board must then find a competent manager to take the school forward. If it was up to me, any school that produces results below 45%, an independent commission of enquiry must be set up, and if the findings indict the management of the school – heads must roll. The principal must be fired.

Inversely, if a school produces matric results above 60%, the entire management and its dedicated staff should be incentivised. And ‘No’, we are not a political party, but ‘Yes’ we love politicians. We love them because we have elected them, we and they have different mandates and we hope very much for co-existence and, whenever possible, cooperation.

Like one president once said ‘the time for individual happiness is over!’ It will no longer cut it for us sit in our ivory towers and criticise the deterioration of the education standards from our lofty positions. We must all come to the table of cooperation to stem this tide. Nobel Laureate Dr. Martin Luther King once said ‘we must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.’

I don’t know about you, but from where we stand as BBEAG we would hate to see this community perish as fools. We have to do something, and as BBEAG we are prepared to work with whoever needs our help. This includes:

· convening, on a regular basis, vacation school programmes or VSPs during school recess to help learners revise and prepare for the final matric exams – like we’ve done during the Easter Holidays

· helping learners choose careers that are viable and that would help the community in the mid to long-term using our Career Counseling & Guidance portfolios

· fundraising during the year using various stimuli programs like Fun Runs, Private individuals and business donations, Entrepreneurial Days, selling branded merchandise, promoting Civvies Days and others measures to raise funds for a bursary scheme. The bursaries will then be awarded to top students at a gala dinner after matric results have been published

· Promoting and fostering a spirit of competition and achievements by incentivising learners with merit awards after trial examinations

· holding leadership camps for learners’ leadership

· hosting an annual education summit where all stakeholders can come together to brainstorm a Programme of Action (POA) for a specific year like we have done last month on the 27 March 2010 at Bela-Bela Showgrounds, and

· many other interventions and stimuli methods deemed effective at a certain point

All this would be done by us – for free – in collaboration with interested stakeholders. We(BBEAG), therefore, would like all of you to help us, help our brother, sisters and children to achieve by supporting us in kind (through your donations & patronship) and in deed (by volunteering your time in helping re-shape the education landscape of our town).

In conclusion, the Bela-Bela Education Advocacy Group will like to take this pristine opportunity to congratulate the good doctor, Dr. Stephen Shuti Khumalo on his many education achievements as, again today, he adds another feather in his already well-decorated education hat. We are very proud of you as an organisation and we are even prouder that you are from Bela-Bela.

This town is in short supply of positive role-models and you’re choosing to stay here, fight side-by-side with this community shows that you are not only a great son-of-the-soil but a true revolutionary who epitomises true feelings of great love as advocated by Ernesto Che Guevara.

We as BBEAG applaud you.

BBEAG planning a leadership camp in May 2010

The BBEAG project team is gearing up for its maiden leadership camp in the month of May 2010.

Plans are afoot to host the most progressive education group in Bela-Bela in the month of May 2010. The focus of the leadership camp would be:

planning for the year
leadership skills
presentation skills
ice-breakers
and other leadership building activities

The 1st BBEAG Education Summit a great success!

Greetings to all our friends,

Summit a success

I am pleased to report that the 1st Annual BBEAG Education Summit held at the Bela-Bela Showgrounds was a great resounding success!

It surpassed our wildest expectations even with the bold predictions we made before the actual event. The level of participation by the delegates and the great atmosphere within which the Summit took place in was nothing short of a miracle.

Opening Prayer

Pastor MP Monareng opened the Education Summit with a good prayer asking the heavens to give the delegates the wisdom needed to arrive at good solutions for the education question.

The good pastor then took his chair to declare the meeting officially opened.

Unexpected delays

The Summit was delayed by about an hour (10.30 instead of 09.30 due to catering hiccups) but the mood remained pregnant with expectations. Guests from all walks of life, including:

· Principals of local schools

· Official proxies

· Parents

· SGB chairperson

· Municipality officials

· Municipal Manager

· Local politicians

· Motivational Speakers

· Parents

· Friends and

· Multitudes of students dressed in full school uniforms

came to witness and bear testimony, to what before last week, was the first ever Education Summit organised and run by the youth of Bela-Bela. Our team went to great length to ensure that everyone was well looked after and that we had enough eats and water for everyone. Due to resource constraints bottled water was only given to the adults and the students helped themselves to clean, tap water (blue drop status, we were told).

Summit program

The program for the Summit had three session happening in a single day; starting at 10.30 till 18.00 hours on the same day. I compered the first session from 10.30 to 13.30 (lunch time).

BBEAG Team introduced

Our Project Manager Jim Lebese introduced the entire BBEAG project team after my initial Welcome Address. Names were matched to faces and an open-door policy was declared.

Vacation School Programme (VSP)vision & mission explained

Our head of VSP Michael Makhubela took the mike after Jim to speak of the mission and vision of the VSP and to urge the students to attend the easter VSP (started yesterday. over 180 students pitched) starting on Monday of the 29 March 2010. He also appealed to teachers, parents and learners to come together to defeat the underachievement experienced in the past.

Learners took the mic too

Soon after Michael finished his speech, learners where given an opportunity to entertain and speak to the delegates. A young male learner told a funny joke about animals and atchaar and had the whole hall in raptures.

A female learner moved the whole hall close to tears when she narrated her story of how important education was to her after she had dropped out for a year.

Keynote Address

Dr. SS Khumalo was the main speaker at the event and spoke passionately about the value of an educated society. Dr. Khumalo is a passionate believer in education and has a long list of education credits to his name and has written a book about the state of education in our town. The book is touted for an April 2010 release.

The good doctor is from Bela-Bela too.

The Inside Story

One of our local high school principals shared the challenges on the current education system as well as factors that dogs education in our town.

Mr. FS Sithole was frank in his report and his hopes for the future. He vowed to work with the BBEAG to help us overturn the epidemic.

Plenaries on Education Improvement

After lunch, the delegates broke into plenary streams to look at various facets of education as well as ways in which the matters could be improved. Delegates took about half an hour to deliberate on this and then nominated speakers to do a report back to the larger group, with a Q&A session after the report.

Many nominees were from the schools and it gave everyone a sense of participation and greatly pleased the young learners present. They fervently participated and gained valuable experience on planning and public speaking.

Motivational Session

Mrs Ngoetjane was on hand to deliver a very detailed speech on how parents and learners can engage each other in order to build a positive image of their children and position them for success.

All and sundry were inspired by the speech and asked questions accordingly.

Municipal Manager speech

The Municipal Manager, Mr. Bambo, gave us his impressions of the event and spoke passionately about his willingness and keenness to help the BBEAG achieve its mission of improving matric results from 0% to 75% across the board in 5 years!

2010 - The Education Action Plan (TEAP)

An action plan to improve education based on the findings and recommendations of the plenary sessions was read out to the delegates by Michael Makhubela (head of VSP) to remind the delegates of our pledge for the 2010 academic year.

This document would be our guide and focus on actions and programmes for the current education year.

Speech by Michael S. Makhubela at the Bela-Bela Career Expo last Friday

Thank you Programme Director, Good morning educators, learners, madam speaker

I believe that matriculation opens a door to a whole new world of possibilities and opportunities. You are at a critical stage of your career. Matric is the beginning of your academic and professional career. Now, you cannot afford to be influenced by negative talk that there are no jobs in the country.

I want to encourage you that do not let other people define your world for you because they will define it small for you. The fact that you are in Matric is proof that you have potential to define your destiny. This would mean making serious and sometimes difficult choices. These choices would be studying when you should be chilling or hanging around with friends.

You have a choice to pass Matric or fail it. We do not fail because we want to fail. Everything that we do is dependent on making right choices. We have to have a good company of friends to help us reach our goals.

Matric is a groundbreaking period of your life. The choices you make today will determine where you will be tomorrow. Doing Matric and writing your exams is a key to the world of immense opportunities. It does not mean that you will not face failure and disappointments. Failure is not fatal. Failure is not permanent. Failure is not eternal. Remember that when you fail, you can get up and move on and learn from it.

It doesn't matter that your dream came true if you spent your whole life sleeping

Today, you are not limited when it comes to choosing your career. Today, you can be an Astronaut, scientist, judge, medical specialist, mayor and an engineer.

South Africa is a growing economy competing with other markets in the world. Our products need people like you to market them internationally. You are now going to enter a world of ideas. Anything that is successful starts with an idea. It is important that you do not hide your ideas. Share them with people that can help you live your dreams. Who knows? Perhaps your idea can solve people's problems. You can create solutions to many challenges in life. Truly that is how you can get into business.

You must knock on doors until your knuckles bleed.
Doors will slam in your face. You must pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and knock again. It’s the only way to achieve your goals in life."

When you leave this place next year remember that the world is your oyster. The world is ready for you. Go out there and shine and make your contribution. Stand up and be counted as a leader, community builder or nation builder and a shinning star.

Lets all obey our parents, and educators.Your parents are a source of inspiration to you. Let their sacrifices inspire you. A saying we’ve all heard before, but few of us have actually given it any thought. Living each day like it’s your last:

- Forces you to think about your priorities.
- It forces you to quit the things that waste your time and energy and to concentrate on the most important things and people in your life.
- If you live that way you make better choices, you treasure each moment and suck the life out of every hour.
- It removes the clutter and garbage that so often chokes our lives.

Living each day like it’s your last is not about living in gloom and fear of death. Rather it is about:

- Grabbing every opportunity.
- Not procrastinating.
- Doing today what you could put off till tomorrow.
- Reaching out to your dreams today.
- Not letting another moment pass you by.
- Living life to the full.

It’s living your life so that when your time comes to go, someone will care and someone will say their life is different and their life is better…because YOU were there.

My message today is titled Life is hard” and it’s about how to live a great life despite the fact that life is difficult.

Everybody wants to be happy in life. We all want to live a perfect life. We want that great job or a successful business. We want to be married to Mr. Right or Mrs Perfect. We want to have great kids. We want to have friends that stick by us come rain or shine. We want to be able to have all the material things life has to offer and have all our problems just disappear.

Everybody wishes for good life. It may be at different levels. One person may define a good life one way and another may describe it another way. For one person a good life may be just having three meals a day and a roof over their head. For another it may be having a huge mansion and a couple of million dollars in the bank.

There are different levels and meanings to what a good life is. But whatever you definition of it, there is perhaps one thing that you may have in common with many other people. You might want that good life stress free. You would like to have it without having to work so hard or struggle so much for it. That is a normal human expectation. Nobody likes to struggle through life.

Unfortunately, that is also what may be stopping you from having that great life. The thought of all that work, all that planning, overcoming hurdles and resistance is enough to make a lot of people give up before they even start. It can all seem too overwhelming, and for many it all just doesn’t seem be worth it. It’s like being drained of energy just at the thought of running a marathon. Before you are even at the starting line the thought of all that running just scares you and tires you so much mentally you just decide not to go for it. It’s just too hard.

Vacation School Programme

Vacation school programme is dedicated to helping students from BelaBela townships that are caught in the “eye of the storm” after the schools received very low grade 12 pass rates. Intensive tutoring programme will be started during schools holidays, which will feature among others tutoring of key subjects, motivational speakers, sessions aimed at assessing study skills and interactive rhythm workshops. A pool of top-notch tutors will be recruited on voluntary basis. Combined lecturing, tutoring and test preparation for all townships school will be run in key subjects including maths, life sciences, accounting, economics, english, physical sciences(physics and chemistry).

The BBEAG project team is happy to announce that we have struck two important bilateral agreements with the following partners:

Bela-Bela Municipality
Local High Schools (Maope & Bela-Bela High)

These partnerships are extremely crucial for us as they will ensure that we get the cooperation we need to implement all necessary intervention programme.

Municipality

The Bela-Bela Municipality is important in that it is the representative of the community of Bela-Bela. This means that every education partnership we undertake would have the desired mandate of the people and ensure that we are fully recognised by all.

The municipality has indicated that it would love to have a long-term relationship with us on issues of education improvement, naturally, we couldnt be happier.

Local Schools

The local high schools we spoke to, i.e. Maope & Bela-Bela High, are very keen on working with us and a joint board and forum between us and the school would be constituted soon. This is order to ensure constant alignment on programmes and to ensure that we manage our relationship as effective as possible.

With the first VSP Summer School mooted to start on the 29 March 2010, two days after the watershed Bela-Bela Education Summit, there would have to be a lot of furious planning between now and then.

BBEAG faces a watershed week

The project team of the Bela-Bela Education Advocacy Group faces an acid test this week as they prepare to meet the principals of three (3) local high schools on a fact-finding mission this Friday, 19 February 2010.

The meeting would be to investigate what went wrong in the previous matriculation year (given the abysmal matric performance) as well as to formulate a strategy that would allow collaboration between the two groups and other stakeholders, in a bid to reverse the situation.

The delegation would be headed by Tshepo Matjila (Programme Coordinator) and would include Michael Makhubela (Head of VSP), Jim Lebese (Project Manager), Tshidi Molebatsi (Head of Stakeholder Relations & Fundraising, Lebogang Monareng (Career Counsellor) and Ledile Sekele (Head of Social & Media Marketing).

The meeting is mooted to start at 14h00 at the Maope Senior Secondary School premises.
